I think everyone has their own method to packing -- whether you're a "throw everything in a suitcase and hope it works out" kind of person or over-the-top organized like yours truly.

For me, I have to carefully pack.  I don't like surprises and I am always prepared - so I have to try on every outfit and here's the kicker -- I actually photograph myself in the outfit.  For example, on this particular trip I need 5 cute outfits.  I tried on about 10 -- took photos in each of them.  When you can scan through the pictures back to back on your phone it's obvious which make the cut and which don't.

You know that feeling that you think you packed some cute outfits and then when you look in the mirror when you're on vacation you think, "this is fugly?"  I've found that taking pictures of the outfits helps eliminate that fugly-outfit-on-vacation moment.

Let's get started.

A couple days before departure I'll pull out my suitcase.  I think the visual helps me brainstorm what I should  take in the days ahead.

As I brainstorm, I'll throw some items in there so when I do start the packing process, I have some items I've already considered to work with.

Then I'll start trying on.  On this particular occasion I tried on while I watched Duck Dynasty. LOVE.

Do you see how this works?  For me it is so much more obvious to see what is going to work and what isn't by taking photos.  By doing this I have already got the basics that I will pack and when it's time to pack toiletries and accessories I will simply pull up these photos to pull what accessories will work best.

I just thought I would share what works for me.  I love reading packing tips, my grandmother who was a flight attendant in the glam 1950s STILL has ridiculously amazing packing skills.  She always has what she needs but that bag is like Mary Poppins -- it's so small but she gets everything in there!

Another packing tip that works for me: I have travel size shampoo/conditioner, pepto, tylenol, toothpaste, lotion, etc. that I keep in my travel case.  When it's time to go somewhere I can simply pull it out, add a hairbrush and a few other things and I'm good to go.

Do you have any secret packing skills?  I like these packing tips from Marie Claire if you're traveling by flight.

  1. Thanks for sharing! I'm going to France for 2 weeks (honeymoon!!) and was already planning doing something similar. :)

    1. FRANCE!!!! Lucky ducky!!!!!! That sounds amazing!!!

  2. Love the strategy - but I LOVED all of your outfits, even the no's! I wish you could come to my house and create outfits for me so that when I wake up in the morning I wouldn't have to try on a million things before getting out the door. Pretty please???

  3. Jennifer Rose told me to check out your blog. You are hilarious. Just love it! Come dress me!!!

  4. Can I please dress ALL of you?!?! That would be so fun -- to play in closets all day (sigh), a girl can dream.

  5. that white (cream?) maxi skirt and chambray shirt should not be a 'no' -- super cute!

  6. Please tell me why I have never clicked on your link from Cassie's page before?! I was ignoring your fabulousness!! Great packing ideas! That is a definite must from here on out. Pictures are a no brainer and I can't believe I never got smart enough to think of that. Awesome blog chick! Can't wait to read more!

  7. Kathleen, thank you so much for doing a packing post! We're going to Hawaii in two weeks, and I thought about asking you for packing tips (I was thinking honeymoon prep, but thought that might be a little premature)- and voila!
