We went to Birmingham last weekend so Christian could cheer on the Rebs and I could visit with the girls. While watching (more like not watching and halfway listening) to the bowl game, I was sipping on a Bloody Mary - a daytime drink that just feels so right.
I can remember my grandmother making me virgin Bloody Marys at family get-togethers. She taught me a few important details for the drink -- lots of olives, lots of celery and serve it in a McCarty glass. Well I don't have McCarty glasses (yet) Grammy, but I can remember the rest!
When I came home, I was determined to shop around in efforts to find what looked like the perfect Bloody Mary...and I definitely found it. I followed this recipe of an NYC bartender's and added a little more of this and that to taste, but she's dead on -- this is the best Bloody Mary you'll ever have!
This recipe makes two delicious drinks.
4 oz. vodka
16 oz. tomato juice
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
Juice of one lemon (keep peel to use on the rim of the glass)
2 tbsp. olive juice
2 tbsp. horseradish
1 tsp. hot sauce
Freshly ground pepper
1 tsp. Old Bay, plus extra for the rim
Garnish with:
2 stalks of celery
A few olives
Two lemon slices
16 oz. tomato juice
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
Juice of one lemon (keep peel to use on the rim of the glass)
2 tbsp. olive juice
2 tbsp. horseradish
1 tsp. hot sauce
Freshly ground pepper
1 tsp. Old Bay, plus extra for the rim
Garnish with:
2 stalks of celery
A few olives
Two lemon slices
Mix the top ingredients together (without the vodka -- that comes later), whisking well to make sure the horseradish is blended properly. Run the lemon peel from the juiced lemon along the rim of your drinking glass(es). Pour some Old Bay seasoning on a flat dish or your cutting board and dab the glass rim in the seasoning. Fill your glass(es) with ice, pour the vodka and fill the rest of the glass with Bloody Mary mix. Toss some olives and celery in that baby and add a lemon slice if you're feeling really fancy.
The hubs doesn't drink tomato juice. In fact, just looking at it gives him the willies -- whatever kid, I can double fist Bloody Marys anyday.

If you do not mind me asking....where did you get your glassware? I just love the monogram layout!
ReplyDeleteI never mind sharing!! Unfortunately these were a recent wedding gift. I looked on the box they came in and there was no text or logo...I'm sorry!! I would try googling it -- I'm sure plenty of websites have similar bar sets.
DeleteWe call it a Caesar and use Clamato juice in place of tomato juice. I'm always attempting to perfect it so I'm going to give your recipe a go! (with Clam, of course...soooo delish)
ReplyDeleteI've never even heard of clamato juice -- I must try!
DeleteIf your husband does his residency in OK I'll double fist Bloody Mary's all day with you! There's a place here that makes them with bacon infused vodka - yum!
ReplyDeleteI love bloody's! They are my favorite drink..well for the day :) I've been known to make a mean bloody, but your recipe looks great too! Have you ever tried Zing Zang? If you like it spicey then you should definitely try it out! I always add more things in, but it's a good base!
ReplyDeleteI love a good zing zang -- definitely a great easy route!
DeleteYUM!!
ReplyDeleteI went to a work conference where a chef from Starwood said his secret "sauce" to make BMs delicious is a dash of balsamic vinegar and a dash of rice vinegar. Everyone who tried swore it was the most delish BM they ever had.
ReplyDeleteCheck out my post today on a few fashion inspiration ideas for 2013 !
Not Going Out Like That
VERY interesting -- I can see how that would be tasty -- I need to try!

I love a good bloody mary and great glasses make it better! Where did you find your glass ware?
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately these were a recent wedding gift. I looked on the box they came in and there was no text or logo...I'm sorry!!
DeleteI'll say what everyone else is saying (and thinking if they aren't saying)....those glasses. Fab. While I'm not a huge fan of tomato juice...I do love the Goose. You can put that in Mimosas, right? Or drink it on the rocks? As long as my glass is as cute as those, no one will question it. xo
ReplyDeleteWe rim our bloody mary glasses with Old Bay too! Like everyone else, I love your glasses!
ReplyDeleteas a fellow bloody connoisseur - i conquer with the Clamato (or Beefmato - if the clam seems weird). try a little dill pickle juice (with or without the olive juice). I've been known to put enough garnish on mine & call it dinner. yum!
ReplyDeletep.s. my mom gave your mom the 411 on the barware :)
ReplyDeleteSeriously my mouth is watering from this! lol! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYum! I am going to have to try this recipe! I had my first bloody mary in NOLA last April and fell in love! I am now hooked!
ReplyDeleteI just started perusing your blog, you are just lovely. Regarding bloody mary's...ever tried them with gin rather than vodka? It's worth a shot, yum.
ReplyDeleteI haven't but it sounds like I need to. Thanks for sharing and visiting CBL! XO
